Lesson Introduction
Your LinkedIn headline is so much more than just a job title. LinkedIn recently increased the character limit to 220-characters, giving you a great opportunity to showcase your expertise, value proposition, and professional aspirations.
It’s one of the first things people see in LinkedIn search results, on your profile, and when you comment or post.
Making those 220 characters count is crucial to standing out and making the right impression.
The Purpose of Your Headline
- Professional Branding: It encapsulates your professional identity and brand in a nutshell.
- Visibility: Keywords in your headline will improve your visibility in LinkedIn searches. This is a very important component of your discoverability.
- First Impression: It contributes significantly to the first impression you make on potential connections, followers, recruiters, and employers.
LinkedIn headlines, sometimes called bios, have traditionally been uninspiring. They consisted of generic titles like “CEO @ ABC,” “Sales Representative @ XYZ,” or just “Freelancing Web Designer.”
Unfortunately, these headlines fail to effectively convey your identity, your role, your passions, or what sets you apart from others in your field.
To stand out, I suggest leveraging your unique qualities in your LinkedIn bio. Consider highlighting the problems you or your company solves, your target audience, and the kind of content you typically share on LinkedIn. By doing so, you can create a headline that truly reflects who you are and what you bring to the table.

Crafting A Compelling Headline
- Consider your Target Audience: Who do you want to connect with? Who are your target Follower Audience? Consider including a line that tells them what you post about.
- Start with Your Job Title: Include your current job title or the role you’re aspiring to if you’re job seeking. It’s straightforward and super search-friendly.
- Highlight Your Value: Mention your key skills or areas of expertise. What do you bring to the table? How do you stand out in your field?
- Use Keywords Wisely: Incorporate industry-relevant keywords to improve searchability but avoid overstuffing.
- Showcase Your Aspirations or Unique Value Proposition: If space allows, add a short phrase about your professional aspirations or what makes you unique.
- Be Clear and Concise: Avoid industry jargon and be direct. Your headline should be easily understood by someone outside your industry.
