The industry selected on a LinkedIn® Company Page is structured information about the organization. It should describe the organization’s primary business activity as accurately as the available LinkedIn industry taxonomy allows.
Choose what the organization is, not who it sells to
A company may sell into healthcare, manufacturing and construction without itself belonging to all three industries. Start with the organization’s own principal activity rather than the industries represented by its customers.
Use the most appropriate available category
LinkedIn’s industry taxonomy contains broad parent industries and more specific categories. Where an accurate specific category exists, it will usually describe the organization more clearly than selecting a very broad parent simply because it feels safer.
Do not guess from old lists
Industry names and taxonomy structures can change. Historical LinkedIn industries still appear in old articles, exported data and existing profiles. Use a current reference rather than assuming an old category remains available.
Use the Leaders Social Industry Finder
The free Leaders Social LinkedIn® Industry Finder lets you search the current industry dataset using official names, business activities and relevant reference terms. It also distinguishes current industries from historical ones.
Use it to narrow the possibilities, then make the final choice based on the organization’s actual primary activity.
Your task
Check the industry currently assigned to your Page. Describe your organization’s primary activity in one sentence, then compare that description with the available LinkedIn industry options. If another category is demonstrably more accurate, record the proposed change and why it is better before updating the Page.
